Organization Details

Organization Information The Office of Career and Technical Education (OCTE), the newest office in the Kentucky Department of Education, is responsible for administration of the Kentucky Tech school district – the first technical education system in the nation to become SACS-CASI accredited because of its continuous improvement process. Kentucky Tech’s 53 area technology centers (ATCs) are strategically located in small to medium sized communities throughout the state. Why? ATCs were originally established in the 1960’s to serve multiple school districts to provide program access because of cost. The 53 ATCs serve 129 local school districts. With a vision to actively engage all students in the mastery of academic and technical skills, the primary purpose of ATCs is to enhance and expand options students need to be ready for college and a career. All 53 Kentucky Tech ATCs have industry certified programs and teachers. All programs undergo a program assessment as part of the system’s continuous improvement process. Kentucky Tech’s curriculum is aligned with the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). System to system dual credit and articulation agreements allow secondary students an opportunity to begin their college career with college credit earned in high school. As the only state operated technical education school district in the Commonwealth, Kentucky Tech provides statewide consistency and continuity of career and technical education programs. Students receive instruction in sound academic principles, theory, laboratory and clinical experiences to ensure they can compete successfully in today's changing workplace. The system is funded through two major sources, state general fund appropriations and federal funds under the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006. Additionally, Support Education Excellence in Kentucky (SEEK) funds are received from the Kentucky Department of Education for secondary students served in Kentucky Tech ATCs. The primary goal of Kentucky Tech area technology centers is to serve secondary students. The role will continue to expand by serving the needs of and partnering with local communities in economic development and training efforts. For more information call toll-free 1-800-223-5632
